A Handful of Stars, by Cynthia Lord

handful of starsReview by J.J. Stoen

Imagine having to deal with an old blind dog that you love, and trying to save his life? In the realistic fiction story A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord, the author explores the challenges of having a sick dog. Lily, a girl who lives with her grandparents, has a poor blind dog named Lucky. Lily loves Lucky so much that she tries to make money by selling bee houses. One day while Lily is picking blueberries, Lucky runs across a street in a search for a girl’s peanut butter jelly sandwich and a truck nearly runs over the blind dog. That’s when Lily meets Salma Santiago. Salma wants to earn the 5,000 dollar grand prize at a beauty pageant at the Blueberry Festival, named after Maine’s famous blueberries. Meanwhile, Lily decides to sell bee houses at the festival to try to save Lucky’s eyes. However, it will cost lots of money to plan, so Lily has to sell lots of bee houses to pay for Lucky’s operation. Will Lucky ever see again? Will Salma win Downeast Blueberry Queen?

This book severely touched my heart. Just dealing with a blind dog is hard enough but actually saving enough money to save your dog? Lily must love Lucky a lot to actually try and save him, even if he is an old dog anyway. Cynthia Lord clearly shows the everlasting bond between man and his best friend. Since I am a dog lover, this is one of my favorite books of all time. Dogs were meant to be loved until the perish and I think that the author really showed that off well. If you have a love for dogs, have a big heart, and have lots of tissues, you have got to read this book.
